The Qualitative Data Case

Introduction

You are preparing a bachelor’s thesis on how people in nursing homes experience restrictions on visits from family and friends. Your interest in the topic was sparked by the Covid-19 pandemic, but has now broadened. Now it also includes e.g. experiences of people who have to move to nursing homes far from family and friends and others who in one way or another have experienced restrictions on visits.

The study is based on qualitative interviews. So far, you have conducted nine interviews with residents in nursing homes in your local area.

This study is your possibility to show your deep knowledge and interest in the area.

Learning outcome

This case will familiarize you with ethical issues that bachelor students commonly face when collecting, analyzing and presenting qualitative data. It contains dilemmas related to, for instance, handling personal data, proper record keeping and data analysis. Questions of honesty and responsibility are also touched upon. It is not always as easy as one might think.

By reflecting on these dilemmas, you will be better prepared to handle these issues that are commonly faced in real life, and – importantly – be better equipped to ask your teachers and fellow students questions that will further improve your competences.
